IN HONOR OF HISPANIC HERITAGE MONTH, WE’RE DONATING $20,000 TO THE CHICANA LATINA FOUNDATION, A NON-PROFIT THAT EMPOWERS CHICANAS LATINAS THROUGH PERSONAL, EDUCATIONAL, AND PROFESSIONAL ADVANCEMENT.

WE ALSO CHATTED WITH HISPANIC QUAY EMPLOYEES AND ASKED THEM ABOUT THEIR ROOTS, EXPERIENCE, AND CULTURE. GET TO KNOW OUR SQUADCOMMUNITY IS QUAY.

 

BRIANNA

What is your heritage and what language(s) do they speak there? Mexican and I speak Spanish.

What is one cultural tradition or celebration that is important to you? Most recently Dia De Los Muertos. I had the chance to celebrate in Mexico City!

In one word, how would you describe your cultural identity or heritage? Familia!

What is one of your favorite sayings in Spanish? Te Amo, I love you (my niece's first words in Spanish)

What does Hispanic Heritage Month mean to you? It's a proud moment to embrace our beautiful culture and reflect how far our families and ancestors have come.


JOCELYN

What is your heritage and what language(s) do they speak there? Mexican, Spanish.

What is one cultural tradition or celebration that is important to you? Dia de la Virgen de Guadalupe.

In one word, how would you describe your cultural identity or heritage? MexicanWhat is one of your favorite sayings in Spanish? Agua que no has de beber déjala correr.

What does Hispanic Heritage Month mean to you? It's a great time to really take an initiative and educate yourself with traditions and customs from all Latin countries and see how they influence life here in the states. When you truly see how many people can bond over a dish, music or a something that reminds them of their heritage/culture it's a very beautiful thing that can bring anyone together while continuing to share.

What is your heritage and what language(s) do they speak there? Chilean and Navajo.

What is one cultural tradition or celebration that is important to you? Chilean Independence Day! Love celebrating every year with my family.

In one word, how would you describe your cultural identity or heritage? Proud!

What is one of your favorite sayings in Spanish? Por la Razon o la Fuerza!

What does Hispanic Heritage Month mean to you? Love being seen for my unique heritage and seeing how proud everyone else is of theirs! I also love how multiple cultures are exposed and we get to learn about all of them not just our neighbors!

 

VIANKA

What is your heritage and what language(s) do they speak there? I'm Mexican American and I speak Spanglish. lol

What is one cultural tradition or celebration that is important to you? Making tamales with my grandma and cousins during Christmas.

In one word, how would you describe your cultural identity or heritage? Community oriented

What is one of your favorite sayings in Spanish? Dime con quién andas y te diré quién eres.

What does Hispanic Heritage Month mean to you? Recognizing the rich culture and traditions that make this community so unique.

ROBERT

What is your heritage and what language(s) do they speak there? Puerto Rican, Spanish.

What is one cultural tradition or celebration that is important to you? Puerto Rico has a VERY long Christmas season (starting after thanksgiving) and ends with Octavitas and the Fiestas de la Calle San Sebastián (or "Fiestas de la SanSe"). I particularly LOVE the foods from this time of year, pasteles, pernil, and our version of "egg nog" called Coquito.

In one word, how would you describe your cultural identity or heritage? Diverse

What is one of your favorite sayings in Spanish? There's so many, how could I possibly choose just one?!

What does Hispanic Heritage Month mean to you? It means remembering those who sacrificed something so we could be where we are today.

ALEX

What is your heritage and what language(s) do they speak there? Mexican-American, Spanish and English.

What is one cultural tradition or celebration that is important to you? Family is at the root of my family and their upbringing. The Mexican culture focuses so much on being a tight family unit. My maternal grandmother upheld this by making a Sunday lunch every Sunday. Every cousin, uncle, aunt, family friend would gather on Sunday's and we'd spend hours talking, laughing and eating. It helped me understand what family can do for you and how we should love and cherish each moment!

In one word, how would you describe your cultural identity or heritage? Colorful
What is one of your favorite sayings in Spanish? "La carne de burro no es transparente" which translates to "donkey meat isn't see through." My mom would say this to me when I would stand in front of her while she's watching TV. Burro, or donkey, is a slang word for dumb. So it was a funny way of saying "hey dummy, move out of the way, I cant see through you."

What does Hispanic Heritage Month mean to you? I think it's a great way to highlight the many cultural backgrounds that the Latin world offers. We say representation is important and I believe it is, to see someone who looks like you, or grew up like you being uplifted can be the key for others of that background to strive for more and give them something to aspire to.

 

EMIRO

What is your heritage and what language(s) do they speak there? Hispanic and Spanish.

What is one cultural tradition or celebration that is important to you? Sept 18 is our independence day and on that day we like to have a cook out and invite everyone.

In one word, how would you describe your cultural identity or heritage? Passionate

What is one of your favorite sayings in Spanish? El que paga apaga.  The one that pays can also turn off.   Example: The one that pays the light bill has the authority to turn off the light to conserve energy.

What does Hispanic Heritage Month mean to you? A recognition and celebration of all the contributions to the world that latin people have made.

RACHEL

What is your heritage and what language(s) do they speak there? Panamanian and Puerto Rican. Spanish.

What is one cultural tradition or celebration that is important to you? In Panama the neighborhood gathers to celebrate the town and it shows the sense of community and family we can appreciate.

In one word, how would you describe your cultural identity or heritage? Empowering

What is one of your favorite sayings in Spanish? Que Xopa

What does Hispanic Heritage Month mean to you? It means representation and celebration of so many Hispanic cultures and the continuation of education for everyone in and outside of the Hispanic community.

TRACY

What is your heritage and what language(s) do they speak there? Peruvian, Spanish.

What is one cultural tradition or celebration that is important to you? Peruvians will know this, and hopefully salivate!  A cultural tradition whenever I visit family in Peru is to eat guinea pig. Roasted guinea pig! This is a traditional dish served on special occasions and dates back to the times of the Inca!

In one word, how would you describe your cultural identity or heritage? Gold

What is one of your favorite sayings in Spanish? "La verdad siempre sale a la luz."

What does Hispanic Heritage Month mean to you? Hispanic Heritage month is a time to reflect, celebrate and recognize the work that still needs to be done within the many Hispanic cultures. The work that is ahead of us while hard should be also seen as blessed because we have so much to give and share.

EVAN

What is your heritage and what language(s) do they speak there? Mexican/Spanish.

What is one cultural tradition or celebration that is important to you? Making tamales during the winter. 

In one word, how would you describe your cultural identity or heritage? Resilient

What is one of your favorite sayings in Spanish? Dime con quien andas y te dire quien eres.

What does Hispanic Heritage Month mean to you? People who haven't or would not normally be interested in Hispanic Heritage are exposed to all kinds of new traditions and history its a time for educating and helping people gain a better understanding of all the different cultures through celebrating them.

VIOLETA

What is your heritage and what language(s) do they speak there? Hispanic/Mexican and I speak Spanish.

What is one cultural tradition or celebration that is important to you? Dia De Los Muertos/ Day of the dead. Its a day where we get to celebrate all of our ancestors and let them know and they are never forgotten. A great way to have the family reunite with Mariachi and celebrate our loved ones.

In one word, how would you describe your cultural identity or heritage? Mahuizzo- meaning Honored. It is a beautiful thing to come from such a beautiful place filled with many traditions, practices, & beliefs. Art, music, & food also shape one's cultural identity.

What is one of your favorite sayings in Spanish? El que no arriesga, no gana.

What does Hispanic Heritage Month mean to you? As a Hispanic women, it means the world to me. It is the core of my values, what defines me and what drives me everyday. This month provides us the opportunity to showcase the pride we have for our culture and celebrate the many accomplishments & contributions made by those that came before us. Hispanics, honor the art, music, the food, the culture with family, love, faith and pride.

 

MIGUEL

What is your heritage and what language(s) do they speak there? Mexican - speak Spanish

What is one cultural tradition or celebration that is important to you? Tepabril - An annual celebration that takes place in Tepatitlán de Morelos, Jalisco, Mexico in honor of el Señor de la Misericordia.

In one word, how would you describe your cultural identity or heritage? Orgulloso - Proud

What is one of your favorite sayings in Spanish? Picoso pero sabroso!

What does Hispanic Heritage Month mean to you? A moment to share my story and my culture to others and an opportunity for me to continue learning about the culture of other Hispanic people, because there is so much history and so many different traditions in our community that I have yet to discover.

JOY 

heritage and what language(s) do they speak there? My mom’s parents were born in Chihuahua, Mexico & were native Spanish speakers.

What is one cultural tradition or celebration that is important to you? One cultural tradition that is important to me is cooking a big Mexican dinner at Thanksgiving with my family! We eat tamales every Thanksgiving and Christmas. I also love how when I accidentally spend all my money for the month on clothes, my mom comes over to cook albondigas soup (Mexican meatball soup) for me.

In one word, how would you describe your cultural identity or heritage? "Spicy"

What is one of your favorite sayings in Spanish? Viva la vida.

What does Hispanic Heritage Month mean to you? Hispanic heritage month to me, means that I get to take time to remind myself of a really important aspect of my identity that I sometimes forget to appreciate. It also means looking around me to see all of those around me who relate to my heritage & who are embracing it too.

What is your heritage and what language(s) do they speak there? I am half Mexican and they speak Spanish!

What is one cultural tradition or celebration that is important to you? I’ve always found Dia de los Muertos to be so interesting!

In one word, how would you describe your cultural identity or heritage? Fun!

What is one of your favorite sayings in Spanish? Te Quiero! <3

What does Hispanic Heritage Month mean to you? It means well-deserved representation and love of and for the Hispanic community. :)
